Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is ads: TrainedByJP at none against CounterUps's shown. CounterUps's advantage is rating (4.9 vs 4.7). On price, review sentiment, ratings volume and update cadence there is nothing between them.

Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Both are free to download. TrainedByJP sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $9.49 per month and CounterUps sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

CounterUps holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.7. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 33 and 30 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 59% of TrainedByJP's written reviews are positive against 55% of CounterUps's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

TrainedByJP ships an update every 6 days, CounterUps every 8 days. The most recent releases landed on July 31, 2026 and September 19, 2026 respectively.
