Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: Cipher at 5.0 against German in pictures's 4.2. German in pictures's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 67%) and ratings volume (9 vs 1). On update cadence, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

German in pictures costs $1.99 and Cipher $2.99 up front. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Cipher holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: German in pictures has 9 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 100% of German in pictures's written reviews are positive against 67% of Cipher's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

German in pictures ships an update every 3 months, Cipher every 4 months. The most recent releases landed on October 26, 2026 and October 22, 2026 respectively.
