Canopyplot
Read full descriptionHide full description
Canopyplot is an offline field workbook for canopy surveys. Record point-grid and densiometer counts, line intercepts and crown-ellipse estimates, or inspect an on-device photo mask. Keep canopy cover, sky openness and green fraction separate. PROTOCOL-AWARE PROJECTS - Maintain a local library of survey plots and stations - Record site codes, observers, terrain, sky, wind, exposure, and field notes - Preserve the method and metric with every observation - Begin with complete worked examples or create a new project FOUR MEASUREMENT WORKBENCHES - Point grid: record fixed canopy hits and review a Wilson 95% confidence interval - Densiometer: preserve four directional counts and individual replicates - Line intercept: enter crown intervals and merge overlaps before calculating covered length - Crown ellipse: estimate projected crown area with the uncorrected-overlap limitation kept visible INSPECTABLE PHOTO LAB - Analyze a photo selected with Apple's system picker entirely on device - Compare the original and classified mask side by side - Adjust color separation and minimum brightness for visible-sky openness or green fractional cover - Review bright clipping, deep shadow, thresholds, exposure context, and quality notes before saving - Practice with 14 bundled seasonal, weather, land-use, and vegetation-density examples PORTABLE REVIEW PACKETS - Create a PDF report that adds pages as the ledger grows - Export a structured CSV observation table - Include complete project JSON for independent review (JSON import is not supported) - Share all three together with the standard iOS share sheet METHODS YOU CAN INSPECT Canopyplot links directly to USDA Forest Service field guidance, an EPA field operations manual, and peer-reviewed smartphone canopy-photography and threshold studies. Canopy cover, canopy openness, green fractional cover, crown closure, leaf area index, and light transmittance are different quantities. Canopyplot does not certify a survey, identify species, estimate leaf area index, or replace an approved protocol. Use the method required by your project and document any departure in the field notes. All project data stays in the app's private container unless you choose the share sheet. A selected photo is processed on device and is not uploaded or stored in the project. No account, subscription, in-app purchase, advertising, analytics, or tracking is included.
