Are websites and social media apps blocked? Is your network unusually slow? Run OONI Probe to find out! With this app, you will examine the blocking of websites and instant messaging apps, measure your network's speed and performance, and check whether systems that could be responsible for censorship and surveillance are in your network. OONI Probe is developed by the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), a free software project (under The Tor Project) that aims to uncover internet censorship around the world. Since 2012, OONI’s global community has collected millions of network measurements from more than 200 countries, shedding light on multiple cases of network interference. ▶ Collect evidence of internet censorship You can check whether and how websites and instant messaging apps are blocked. The network measurement data you will collect may serve as evidence of internet censorship. ▶ Detect systems responsible for censorship and surveillance OONI Probe tests are also designed to uncover the presence of systems (middleboxes) that could be responsible for censorship and surveillance. ▶ Measure the speed and performance of your network You can measure the speed and performance of your network by running OONI's implementation of the Network Diagnostic Test (NDT). You can also measure video streaming performance with the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) test. ▶ Open data OONI publishes network measurement data because open data allows third parties to verify OONI findings, conduct independent studies, and answer other research questions. Openly publishing OONI data also helps increase transparency of internet censorship around the world. You can explore and download OONI data here: https://ooni.io/data/ ▶ Free software All OONI Probe tests (including our NDT and DASH implementations), are based on free and open source software. The Internet Archive Donate Books app helps donors determine which books from their collection to donate to the Internet Archive so they can be preserved and digitized. The app allows users to scan their book barcodes or identifiers to figure out which books to donate. Users can scan book barcodes or OCR printed identifiers in their books using their phone camera to identify their books and match to corresponding metadata. They will then receive feedback on whether the Internet Archive wants to preserve and digitize the book. The app includes modes for scanning barcodes or using OCR to scan printed identifiers. Simply place the barcode or identifier in the view of your phone camera and see a red or green response indicating whether to donate the book or not. For installation instructions, where to report bugs or request assistance, and information about physical item donations to the Internet Archive please see our help center page.

Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: OONI Probe at 4.5 against Donate Books's 4.0. OONI Probe also leads on ratings volume (91 vs 7) and update cadence (every 2 months vs every 4 months). On price, review sentiment, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
OONI Probe holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: OONI Probe has 91 ratings behind it against 7, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 58% of OONI Probe's written reviews are positive against 60% of Donate Books's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
OONI Probe ships an update every 2 months, Donate Books every 4 months. Both last shipped on October 24, 2026.
