Verdict
The clearest difference is price: iDocCam at Free against Backlit!'s $1.99. iDocCam also leads on rating (2.4 vs 1.0) and update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 9 months). Backlit!'s advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 3) and ads (none vs shown). On device support there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
iDocCam is free to download; Backlit! costs $1.99 up front. iDocCam sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. Backlit! asks for nothing beyond the download.
iDocCam holds the better App Store score, 2.4 against 1.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: iDocCam has 42 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of Backlit!'s written reviews are positive against 30% of iDocCam's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Backlit! ships an update every 9 months, iDocCam every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 4, 2026 and October 12, 2026 respectively.
