Chess is a board game for two players. It is played on a square board, made of 64 smaller squares, with eight squares on each side. Each player starts with sixteen pieces: eight pawns, two knights, two bishops, two rooks, one queen and one king. The goal of the game is for each player to try and checkmate the king of the opponent. Checkmate is a threat ('check') to the opposing king which no move can stop. It ends the game. During the game the two opponents take turns to move one of their pieces to a different square of the board. One player ('White') has pieces of a light color; the other player ('Black') has pieces of a dark color. There are rules about how pieces move, and about taking the opponent's pieces off the board. The player with white pieces always makes the first move. Because of this, White has a small advantage, and wins more often than Black in tournament games. Chess is popular and is often played in competitions called chess tournaments. It is enjoyed in many countries. -- 12 play levels (Novice->Expert) This uses intelligent weakening for lower levels. Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: Chess Challenge Elite at 4.2 against Chess's 1.0. Chess Challenge Elite also leads on ratings volume (17 vs 1). Chess's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases). On price, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Chess Challenge Elite holds the better App Store score, 4.2 against 1.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Chess Challenge Elite has 17 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 79% of Chess Challenge Elite's written reviews are positive against 100% of Chess's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
