Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: Dalai Lama at none against Mindgem's shown. Dalai Lama also leads on monetization model (free vs ad-supported) and ratings volume (226 vs 24). Mindgem's advantage is device support (3 vs 1) and iOS requirement (13.0 vs 16.0). On price, rating, review sentiment and update cadence there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.9 for Dalai Lama against 4.9 for Mindgem. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Dalai Lama has 226 ratings behind it against 24, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 92% of Dalai Lama's written reviews are positive against 88% of Mindgem's.
Dalai Lama ships an update every 3 months, Mindgem every 4 months. Both last shipped on October 24, 2026.
