Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is update cadence: Landover at every 4 days against Retro Commander's every 2 months. Landover also leads on rating (4.2 vs 3.8) and ratings volume (86 vs 16). Retro Commander's advantage is monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases) and review sentiment (80% vs 68%). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Both are free to download. Retro Commander sells 14 one-off in-app purchases and Landover sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Landover holds the better App Store score, 4.2 against 3.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Landover has 86 ratings behind it against 16, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 80% of Retro Commander's written reviews are positive against 68% of Landover's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Retro Commander ships an update every 2 months, Landover every 4 days. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and October 20, 2026 respectively.
