The official Buchenwald Memorial app In 1937, the Nazis had the Buchenwald concentration camp built on Ettersberg Mountain, just outside the city of Weimar. By the end of the war, the SS had held more than a quarter of a million persons from nearly all countries of Europe in custody here and in the many Buchenwald subcamps. Beginning in August 1945, the Soviet occupying power used parts of the former concentration camp as one of its special camps. After the dissolution of the special camp in early 1950, the German Democratic Republic established a national monument on the Ettersberg. Today the name "Buchenwald" stands like almost no other for the complexities of twentieth-century German and European history. The app offers a tour of the former camp grounds and a tour of the permanent exhibition on the history of the Buchenwald concentration camp. In both cases, you can design the tour according to your individual preferences. On the camp grounds, the app provides basic information on 27 historically significant sites, supplemented with photographs from the memorial's extensive photo archive. In addition, former inmates talk about their experiences. The tour of the permanent exhibition "Buchenwald: Ostracism and Violence 1937 to 1945" features the main exhibition texts and provides explanations of selected objects. Biographies shed light on the fates of the inmates. The app can be used both as an interactive tour guide at the memorial and as a general source of information on the history of the place. Many traces of the past have faded over the years, however, to such a degree that even the historically inclined pass them by completely oblivious. The berlinHistory app pins the city’s historic sites, buildings, and events to their exact locations, allowing the hidden past to be seen and experienced. There are many meticulously designed websites and apps on the history of Berlin, but most of these are difficult to find, rarely updated, and only reach a limited audience. With the berlinHistory app, we hope to create THE definitive historical platform for Berlin, where all of the city’s establishments are present. In cooperation with all of Berlin’s historical and cultural institutions, the berlinHistory app has developed a “digital museum” that preserves all sorts of historical content, establishes meaningful thematic connections and ensures easy access for users. The meta- app, created as a continuously growing platform for Berliners and visitors young and old alike, is free and without advertisements. Besides texts on historical sites, themes, and epochs available in multiple languages and accompanied by before-and-after photos, the numerous POIs (Point of Interest) also provide historical video footage and audio recordings of first-hand accounts. Furthermore, the app offers audio-guided, thematic walking tours of historically significant locations, even outside of the major tourist areas. Different display options (thematic view, list view, and epoch view) offer users the ability to filter content to suit their individual interests and optimize their experience.
