Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: Sphero Play at none against Dude Perfect's shown. Sphero Play also leads on rating (4.8 vs 4.4) and monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases). Dude Perfect's advantage is update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 2 months). On price, review sentiment, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Sphero Play holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Sphero Play has 37K ratings behind it against 3.4K, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 69% of Sphero Play's written reviews are positive against 72% of Dude Perfect's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Sphero Play ships an update every 2 months, Dude Perfect every 3 weeks. Both last shipped on October 28, 2026.
