Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: SAM Trainer at none against Hevy's 4. Hevy's advantage is update cadence (weekly vs every 12 months) and ratings volume (102K vs 1). On price, rating, ads and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Hevy sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month. SAM Trainer asks for nothing beyond the download.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 5.0 for SAM Trainer against 4.9 for Hevy. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Hevy has 102K ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.
SAM Trainer ships an update every 12 months, Hevy weekly. The most recent releases landed on November 2, 2026 and November 8, 2026 respectively.
