My name is Lisa VanDamme and I am the founder of VanDamme Academy, a small private school in Southern California with big ambitions to provide students with an exceptional education and a joyful learning experience. The single, animating element of my career – the one that provides me with an endlessly replenishing daily dose of endorphins – is teaching literature. I am not a literary scholar. I cannot classify works by “school” or “movement,” I cannot describe how they reflect the historical period in which they were written, I don’t know how to inventory their various literary devices. And I don’t care to. If I have a unique talent as a teacher of literature, it boils down to this: I am passionate about great books. Hugo wrenches my heart and makes me weep tears of anguish and of wonderment. Rostand stirs me to noble ambition in work and love and life. Tolstoy challenges me to think – and to feel – on planes higher than I had ever known. Ibsen, Dostoevsky, Balzac, Jane Austen, Maupassant, Rattigan, Sinclair Lewis – all have helped me to see, in the words of English professor Mark Edmundson, “that life is bigger, sweeter, more tragic and intense—more alive with meaning than I had thought.” I derive profound personal joy from literature, and I have a knack for helping others do the same. That is why I started Read With Me. I know so many people – thoughtful, intelligent, motivated people – who avoid reading the classics. And for understandable reasons: they’re busy, they don’t know what to read, they’ve never been taught how to enjoy it, they have unpleasant memories of tedious discussions in high school English… If you are intimidated, uninitiated, jaded, disillusioned or just plain busy – read with me. Readability’s award-winning Smart Reading & Comprehension Learning App gives your child the effectiveness of 1-on-1 tutoring. Our breakthrough voice-based technology LISTENS while your child READS, highlighting, and correcting any problem words. Kids from kindergarten to 6th grade will improve their reading, vocabulary, and comprehension skills all in the convenience of a mobile app. IMPROVE READING WITH 1-ON-1 TUTORING Readability prompts your child to read aloud and listens while providing reading help and real-time pronunciation correction as your child reads. If they get stuck, they can tap on the speaker icon to have Readability read the selected passage or word aloud. Readability automatically selects the right reading material for each child to maximize improvement and minimize the reading struggle. Your child will be eager to learn as these fun and educational grade-level stories come to life with bright illustrations. IMPROVE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS Our industry-first comprehension with Interactive Voice-based Questions & Answers (IVQA™) asks your child questions verbally about the story they just read to improve their critical thinking skills. Your child then is prompted to answer the question verbally to ensure they fully understand what they read. Comprehension is as important as reading fluency, we deliver both in our smart reading app for kids. IMPROVE VOCABULARY Readability makes it easy to learn new words and their meaning with a personalized vocabulary list for your child. Your child can long-press on any word while reading to learn its pronunciation, meaning, and add it to their vocabulary list. Their vocabulary list is neatly organized A-Z and by book to further practice, review, and perfect new or difficult words. SET AND TRACK READING GOALS Set goals and follow your child’s progress with your very own Parent Dashboard detailing what they have read, reading duration, accuracy, comprehension, and speed. Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is monetization model: Read With Me at free with in-app purchases against Readability's subscription. Read With Me also leads on iOS requirement (11.0 vs 16.4). Readability's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and ratings volume (25K vs 51). On price, rating, review sentiment and update cadence there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Read With Me sells 17 in-app purchases, starting at $6.99 per month and Readability sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $19.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.7 for Read With Me against 4.6 for Readability. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Readability has 25K ratings behind it against 51, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews split almost evenly too, at 56% and 56% positive.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Read With Me ships an update every 3 weeks, Readability fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 24, 2026 and October 25, 2026 respectively.
