Abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear, often called "ghost gear", is one of the most harmful forms of marine debris. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of fishing gear are lost in the ocean every year, where nets, lines and traps keep catching fish, seabirds, turtles and marine mammals long after they've been left behind. Ghost Gear Reporter, developed in partnership with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI), lets anyone report lost fishing gear they come across, whether on the shoreline, on the water or on the sea bed. In just a few steps you can record: 1) Where the gear is, captured automatically from your location 2) What you were doing when you found it 3) Details about the gear: type, size and condition 4) Photos, taken with your camera or chosen from your library 5) Any wildlife entangled in the gear FOR EVERYONE Public reports are anonymous. No account or sign-in is needed. Just open the app and report. FOR ORGANIZATIONS Fishers, recovery teams and partner organizations can enter their organization code to file reports on behalf of their group. WORKS OFFLINE Found gear somewhere without signal? Your report is saved on your device and sent automatically once you're back online. WHY IT MATTERS Your reports go to the GGGI Data Portal, where they help guide gear recovery and add to a global dataset that researchers, governments and the fishing industry use to understand and prevent gear loss. Join people and organizations around the world in tackling this hard-to-see but deeply destructive problem. Every report counts.

Depending on the fishery, data may also be shared with the appropriate regulatory agencies. You data is not used for marketing purposes and is not sold or given to data brokers.
