Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: iPlayer at 100% against X's 43%. iPlayer also leads on rating (5.0 vs 2.2) and ads (none vs shown). X's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 7) and ratings volume (10 vs 1). On price and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. iPlayer sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. X asks for nothing beyond the download.
iPlayer holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 2.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: X has 10 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 43% of X's written reviews are positive against 100% of iPlayer's.
X ships an update every 3 weeks, iPlayer every 3 days. The most recent releases landed on October 2, 2026 and September 26, 2026 respectively.
