Verdict
The clearest difference is ratings volume: MX Player at 362K against MX Player's 4.8K. MX Player's advantage is review sentiment (58% vs 37%). On price, rating, update cadence and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. MX Player sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per year and MX Player sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.6 for MX Player against 4.6 for MX Player. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MX Player has 362K ratings behind it against 4.8K, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 37% of MX Player's written reviews are positive against 58% of MX Player's.
MX Player ships an update monthly, MX Player every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 17, 2026 and October 16, 2026 respectively.
