When people hear the term "Einstein's theory of Special Relativity", they automatically assume its above their heads. You hear terms like "Space Time" and the famous equation "e=mc^2" and it sounds way too abstract to understand for someone without a PhD in Physics. Designed by Carnegie Mellon University's Dr. Ira Rothstein, this app is aimed at experientially explaining Einstein's theory of special relativity to anybody.
The Relativity Tales
Explore the principles of special relativity through interactive thought experiments and engaging narratives. This app transforms complex scientific concepts into intuitive experiences, making science accessible and emotionally resonant.
- Interactive thought experiments
- Narrative-driven learning
- Intuitive science exploration
- Exploration of spacetime concepts
- Courtroom thriller scenarios
- Space exploration narratives

What if you ran close to the speed of light − would time really slow down? The Relativity Tales is an interactive science story that lets you experience Einstein's special relativity with your fingertips, no equations required. Play with the principles yourself, then step into stories where those very principles become the key. ■ Fingertips, not formulas Run the thought experiments Einstein could only perform in his head, right on your screen. Watch time flow differently for someone in motion, lengths shrink, and the very idea of "at the same time" fall apart before your eyes. ■ Stories where science is the plot Every principle you experience becomes the key to a story. · A courtroom thriller where the relativity of simultaneity cracks an impossible alibi · An explorer's dream of reaching the edge of the universe, made possible by length contraction · A moment where time seems to stand still, born from time dilation The moment you understand the science, the story starts to look different. ■ Contents Chapter 1. Lorentz Transformation − The invisible rules of spacetime Chapter 2. Relativity of Simultaneity − When "simultaneous" falls apart Chapter 3. A Story of Simultaneity − A spacetime-trick courtroom thriller Chapter 4. Length Contraction − The secret of shrinking distance Chapter 5. A Story of Length Contraction − An explorer's longing dream Chapter 6. Time Dilation − Does time keep a different beat? Chapter 7. A Story of Time Dilation − The moment time seemed to stop Chapter 8. Lorentz Playground − Lorentz transformation, your way ■ Perfect for - Science lovers who get a headache at the sight of equations - Anyone who watches a sci-fi movie and wants to know the science behind it - Anyone who's ever wondered, "So what IS relativity, anyway?" - Parents who want to share the wonder of science with their kids - Teachers looking for a great tool to show relativity in class ■ Good to know The first 3 chapters are free to play. The remaining chapters can be unlocked with an in-app purchase. School and institution inquiries: phyilm.official@gmail.com Take the equations out of science, add a story, and what remains is wonder.
