Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: Lerf at 100% against Budgerigar's 25%. Lerf also leads on rating (5.0 vs 3.7) and update cadence (every 5 days vs every 3 months). Budgerigar's advantage is device support (3 vs 1) and iOS requirement (12.0 vs 17.0). On price, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Budgerigar sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $4.99 per month and Lerf sells 5 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Lerf holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Lerf has 15 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 25% of Budgerigar's written reviews are positive against 100% of Lerf's.
Budgerigar ships an update every 3 months, Lerf every 5 days. The most recent releases landed on November 3, 2026 and October 31, 2026 respectively.
