Celsius® hollow section design vs Steel Sections
Price, ratings, monetisation and update history for both apps, side by side — with what reviewers say about each.
Celsius® hollow section design
This app assists structural engineers in selecting the optimal hollow section size based on design load conditions and buckling length. It calculates and lists suitable sections from a comprehensive range, providing key information like efficiency factor and mass per meter. Users can filter results by size, utilization, embodied CO₂, or weight, and share selections via email or messaging.
- Calculate section size based on axial load and buckling length
- Select sections for members in bending
- List sections with efficiency factor and mass per meter
- Filter results by size, utilization, CO₂, or weight

This app is designed to help structural engineers to find the right hollow section size for their application. Just enter your design load conditions – ultimate axial load and required buckling length – and this app will calculate which section size, from the comprehensive Celsius® range of structural hollow sections, will best match your application. The app will also select sections for members in bending, based on strength or user‐specified deflection limit. The app will list the sections which meet your criteria, with all the relevant information, including the efficiency factor and mass per metre. Sections are classified relating to their availability in the UK market, so giving you confidence that your selected section will be widely available. Filters may be set to identify sections of a certain size, or utilization. Using the filters, results may be ordered by embodied CO₂, by size or by weight. Want to save your results? Just hold on the selected section and share it by email or any other messaging service. The Celsius range of fully normalized, true hot finished hollow sections from Tata Steel is fully compliant with EN 10210 and CE marked for construction applications. The range covers square, rectangular, circular and elliptical hollow sections from 40x40x4mm to 400x400x16mm and equivalent sizes in other shapes, with circular sections up to 508x16mm.

Steel Sections is a practical and fast-to-use tool designed to assist in the structural design of steelwork. The application, conceived and developed by Fondazione Promozione Acciaio and tested by leading executive design firms, architectural practices, and structural engineers, features a comprehensive database of over 9,000 steel profiles: IPE, IPN; HE, HD, HL, HLZ, HP; T-sections; UPN, UPE, U channels; equal and unequal leg angles; hot-finished and cold-formed circular, square, and rectangular hollow sections; plates; sheet piling; cold-formed steel (CFS) sections and sandwich panels. Key Features and Functionality: • Commercial Availability: Real-time data on profile availability, procurement lead times, and minimum order quantities. • Profile Search & Geometric Data: Quick and advanced search via category-specific filters. • Beam Verification: Calculation of stresses and deflections for single-span beams, including Ultimate Limit State (ULS) resistance checks and Serviceability Limit State (SLS) deformation checks. Calculations are adaptable based on boundary conditions, span length, loading types, profile arrangement, and steel grade. • Plate Verification: Thickness-based assessment. • Mass and Surface Area: Calculation per unit length. • Critical Load: Evaluation of the buckling load for members. • Design Resistance: Calculation of cross-sectional design strength. • Structural Analysis: Calculation of internal forces and deflections for both statically determinate and indeterminate beams. • User Customization: A "Favorites" section to save up to 50 profiles and a "Compare" function to evaluate different profile characteristics side-by-side. Future updates will integrate additional products and advanced functionalities.
