Verdict
OptiFlight and Train Manager both sit at 4.6 stars, but that hides the real split: 80% of OptiFlight's written reviews are positive against 52% of Train Manager's. Train Manager's advantage is update cadence (fortnightly vs every 6 weeks). On price, rating, ratings volume and ads there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. OptiFlight sells 3 one-off in-app purchases and Train Manager sells 12 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Train Manager holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 1.3K and 927 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 80% of OptiFlight's written reviews are positive against 52% of Train Manager's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
OptiFlight ships an update every 6 weeks, Train Manager fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 13, 2026 and October 15, 2026 respectively.
