Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: Shift Work at every 2 days against Work Counter's every 3 weeks. Shift Work also leads on monetization model (free vs freemium). Work Counter's advantage is ratings volume (56 vs 1). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Work Counter sells 5 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month and Shift Work sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Shift Work holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Work Counter has 56 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.
Work Counter ships an update every 3 weeks, Shift Work every 2 days. The most recent releases landed on October 27, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
