Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: Whisper Caption at 100% against Kaptioned's 56%. Whisper Caption also leads on rating (5.0 vs 4.5). Kaptioned's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 11 days vs every 3 months). On price, in-app purchases, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Kaptioned sells 5 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per 7 days and Whisper Caption sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Whisper Caption holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Kaptioned has 191 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 56% of Kaptioned's written reviews are positive against 100% of Whisper Caption's.
Kaptioned ships an update every 11 days, Whisper Caption every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 27, 2026 and October 25, 2026 respectively.
