CoThings accounts for the current number of people using shared areas like the kitchen or utilities like washing machines, dryers in realtime, using iBeacons as optional. You can use iBeacons for counters. It will automatically update the status of the rooms even the application is not running. The application needs a server to run, if you're a developer you can host the server by yourself easily.
