Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: Word Tracker at every 2 weeks against Wave Writer's every 2 months. Word Tracker also leads on ratings volume (268 vs 5) and rating (4.8 vs 4.6). Wave Writer's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 81%) and iOS requirement (13.4 vs 18.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Wave Writer sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Word Tracker sells 6 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Word Tracker holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Word Tracker has 268 ratings behind it against 5, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 100% of Wave Writer's written reviews are positive against 81% of Word Tracker's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Wave Writer ships an update every 2 months, Word Tracker every 2 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 5, 2026 and October 13, 2026 respectively.
