Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Chess Mega Bundle at 4.6 against Chess Ultimate's 4.1. Chess Ultimate's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 4 days vs every 15 months). On price, ratings volume, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Chess Mega Bundle sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Chess Ultimate sells 6 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Chess Mega Bundle holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.1. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 126 and 128 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of Chess Mega Bundle's written reviews are positive against 63% of Chess Ultimate's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Chess Mega Bundle ships an update every 15 months, Chess Ultimate every 4 days. The most recent releases landed on October 29, 2026 and October 30, 2026 respectively.
