With Algebra Tutor, you learn by doing! The course is designed to help you develop mastery and gain a deeper understanding of topics ranging from number practice to building, simplifying, and manipulating algebraic expressions, using formulae, and solving equations - including simultaneous equations. * Animations, as well as being fun to watch, have been created to help you understand how and why things simplify - you can pause them, restart them, slow them down, or speed them up to see exactly what’s happening! * Access explanations, hints, examples, and tips from within each task. * Work at your own pace, practising as much as you like in each section - Algebra Tutor will keep generating more tasks. * Choose your own route through the course. Algebra Tutor will show you which topics could be started next based on the ones already completed. * Complete topics to access their revision sections - attempt these as often as you like, they will be different each time! Algebra Tutor uses 3 modes - each one is an important stage in the learning process, so we’ll move between them many times: • Show Me Mode - Enter steps, then watch animations to see how they’re done. • Step Check Mode - We’ll check each step as you walk through a task. • Independent Mode - Edit any line as you fly through the whole task yourself! You’re in control of your own learning with Algebra Tutor - once you have mastered tasks in a section, you can choose when to move on. Topics have between 3 and 7 sections each, plus a revision section once completed - if you’d like more practice, or a refresher, topics can be restarted any time without losing your progress. Most tasks involve some form of algebraic manipulation, with the start of some sections also presenting important information and explanations along with a variety of multiple-choice style tasks. To help you develop your long-term memory, prompts to revise topics are displayed in the completed topics list at increasing time intervals after each completion of a revision section. We hope to add many more topics and features in the future - see https://algebra‑tutor.xyz for more details. Have fun learning!

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: Math Problems 1st at 4.7 against Algebra Tutor's 3.0. Math Problems 1st also leads on ratings volume (13K vs 3). Algebra Tutor's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases). On price, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Math Problems 1st sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $12.99 per month and Algebra Tutor sells 2 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Math Problems 1st holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Math Problems 1st has 13K ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 85% of Math Problems 1st's written reviews are positive against 100% of Algebra Tutor's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
