Build quaint island towns with curvy streets. Build small hamlets, soaring cathedrals, canal networks, or sky cities on stilts. Block by block. No goal. No real gameplay. Just plenty of building and plenty of beauty. That's it. Townscaper is an experimental passion project. More of a toy than a game. Pick colors from the palette, plop down colored blocks of house on the irregular grid, and watch Townscaper's underlying algorithm automatically turn those blocks into cute little houses, arches, stairways, bridges and lush backyards, depending on their configuration.

Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: Railbound at every 3 days against Townscaper's every 3 months. Railbound also leads on rating (4.8 vs 4.5). Townscaper's advantage is chart position (#10 vs unranked) and ratings volume (966 vs 119). On price, review sentiment, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Townscaper costs $4.99 and Railbound $4.99 up front. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Railbound holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Townscaper has 966 ratings behind it against 119, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 82% of Townscaper's written reviews are positive against 80% of Railbound's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Townscaper ships an update every 3 months, Railbound every 3 days. Both last shipped on November 3, 2026.
