On the Ave is an AI-powered app that helps students discover affordable, under-recognized local businesses both on and off campus. When students arrive on campus, many gravitate toward the same familiar restaurants. But beyond those well-known spots are incredible hidden gems, Immigrant-owned restaurants, family-run cafés, and independent local businesses. On the Ave makes discovering them easy. Using natural-language search, students can type exactly what they’re looking for: “Affordable Iraqi food near campus” “Quiet café to study near Comstock Ave” “Best dessert under $10” “Late-night food walking distance from campus” The app then generates personalized recommendations based on budget, proximity, preferences, and community ratings. As students interact with the platform, the recommendation system improves over time — becoming smarter, more personalized, and more relevant. Unlike traditional review platforms that prioritize popularity or paid promotion, On the Ave is built specifically for students. Our recommendations highlight: Affordability Walkability and campus proximity Underrepresented and immigrant-owned businesses Authentic student reviews and photos Students can post reviews, upload pictures, and create a student-driven feed that showcases Syracuse’s local food and cultural scene. This transforms the app into more than just a search tool — it becomes a community-powered guide. Why it matters: Many small and immigrant-owned businesses in Syracuse offer some of the city’s most unique and affordable experiences but lack strong online visibility. At the same time, students often remain within a “campus bubble,” unaware of what exists just beyond it. On the Ave bridges that gap. By connecting students with local restaurants and off-campus experiences, the app strengthens ties between campus and community while supporting small, locally owned businesses.
