Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: BAS at 5.0 against DefaultVPN's 3.7. DefaultVPN's advantage is ratings volume (58 vs 3). On price, review sentiment, update cadence and ads there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
BAS holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: DefaultVPN has 58 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 42% of BAS's written reviews are positive against 43% of DefaultVPN's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
BAS ships an update every 6 weeks, DefaultVPN every 4 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 3, 2026 and October 12, 2026 respectively.
