Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Widgetal at 4.4 against Transparent Widget's 3.7. Widgetal also leads on monetization model (free with in-app purchases vs subscription) and update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 2 months). Transparent Widget's advantage is review sentiment (46% vs 21%). On price, ads, in-app purchases and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Transparent Widget sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month and Widgetal sells 8 in-app purchases, starting at $1.49 per 3 months. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Widgetal holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Widgetal has 589 ratings behind it against 51, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 46% of Transparent Widget's written reviews are positive against 21% of Widgetal's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Transparent Widget ships an update every 2 months, Widgetal every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 7, 2026 and October 14, 2026 respectively.
