EM3D vs OpticALLY 3D Scan
Price, ratings, monetisation and update history for both apps, side by side — with what reviewers say about each.
EM3D
This utility app acts as a second screen for a 3D scanning application. It allows users to easily scan objects other than themselves by mirroring the scanning device's screen to another iOS device. This feature is particularly useful for capturing detailed 3D models.
- Second screen functionality
- Mirrors scanning device screen
- Facilitates scanning objects other than self
- Standalone app option
- Compatible with older iOS versions

Use Mirror Saver as a second screen when 3D scanning with EM3D: Ethan Makes 3D Scanner. Since EM3D uses the high resolution front-facing True Depth sensor, it can be difficult to scan anything other than yourself because you have to point the screen of the scanning device toward the object being scanned. The Mirror Saver feature in EM3D allows you to broadcast the screen to another iOS device, so you can hold the devices back to back and see what you're scanning . However, EM3D requires iOS 13 or higher. Devices that don't have iOS 13 or higher can download the standalone Mirror Saver app, which provides the screen functionality of the Mirror Saver feature.

Designed for the discerning. Powered by your iPhone's TrueDepth camera. Crafted entirely on-device. OpticALLY captures a sub-millimeter 3D scan of your face and computes the exact measurements an optician would take by hand — pupillary distance, bridge, temple, frame and lens width, and more — in seconds. No fitting room, no caliper, no guesswork. — FEATURES — ▸ Export your face in 3D Every scan can be exported as an .OBJ, .PLY, or .USDZ file. Drop it straight into Blender, Fusion 360, ZBrush, or Unity. 3D-print a digital twin, build a custom avatar, or design eyewear that fits only you. ▸ More accurate than LiDAR The front-facing TrueDepth camera projects thousands more depth points onto your face than the rear LiDAR scanner — delivering approximately 0.5 mm of measurement precision. The same hardware Apple trusts for Face ID, repurposed for optical-grade fitting. ▸ Twelve clinical measurements, in real time Binocular and monocular PD, bridge width, nose width, nose length, temple length, frame width, lens width, face width, face height, cheekbone width, jawline width. Every dimension your optician asks for, captured and displayed instantly. ▸ Privacy as a feature, not a footnote Every scan is processed locally on your iPhone. No cloud. No server. No data collected, transmitted, or stored. Your face is yours alone — measurements live in the app, and scan files are discarded when you close it, unless you choose to export them yourself. ▸ OpticALLY Pro Unlock the full measurement set, export, and on-device 3D mesh reconstruction with an OpticALLY Pro subscription. Restore prior purchases anytime from Settings. — REQUIREMENTS — OpticALLY requires an iPhone with a TrueDepth front camera (Face ID). iPads are not supported at this time. — PRIVACY — Privacy policy: https://wonmor.github.io/OpticALLY-iOS/ — TERMS — Terms of Use (EULA): https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/

Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: OpticALLY 3D Scan at 100% against EM3D's 33%. EM3D's advantage is rating (4.0 vs 3.0) and in-app purchases (none vs 2). On price, ratings volume, ads and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. OpticALLY 3D Scan sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. EM3D asks for nothing beyond the download.
EM3D holds the better App Store score, 4.0 against 3.0. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 5 and 2 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 33% of EM3D's written reviews are positive against 100% of OpticALLY 3D Scan's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
