Verdict

The call

Sporcle and Roll both sit at 4.7 stars, but that hides the real split: 79% of Roll's written reviews are positive against 35% of Sporcle's. Roll also leads on ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (weekly vs monthly). Sporcle's advantage is chart position (#32 vs unranked) and ratings volume (4.1K vs 460). On price, rating, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Sporcle sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $5.99 per month and Roll sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.7 for Sporcle against 4.6 for Roll. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Sporcle has 4.1K ratings behind it against 460, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 35% of Sporcle's written reviews are positive against 79% of Roll's.
