Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: Cloudone Self at 56% against MX Player's 16%. Cloudone Self also leads on ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 2 months vs every 14 months). MX Player's advantage is rating (4.4 vs 4.0) and ratings volume (14K vs 18). On price, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
MX Player holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MX Player has 14K ratings behind it against 18, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 16% of MX Player's written reviews are positive against 56% of Cloudone Self's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
MX Player ships an update every 14 months, Cloudone Self every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 29, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
