Telugu is a Dravidian language spoken in southern India, primarily in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It has an alphasyllabary script, typical of languages of India. It is one of the most spoken langugages of the world population-wise (typically ranked around #11) and the fourth in India, with diasporas in other Indian states, the USA (especially New Jersey and California), Australia, Canada, Fiji, Western Europe, the Arab Gulf states, and more. Some of the earliest Telugu inscriptions date back to between 400-100 BCE. The language has undergone significant change over its lifespan, traditionally with heavy influence from Sanskrit contributing to formal vocabulary while today's colloquial speech is commonly peppered with borrowings from English. There are three major dialects of Telugu: the Coastal dialect on the coast in Andhra, the Rayalaseema dialect spoken in four southern districts of Andhra Pradesh, and the Telangana dialect of the state of Telangana. This app is designed to help you become comfortable with recognizing more and more complex letter forms until you can read and construct full-words. Start first by studying the vowels, practicing writing them down and then trying the quiz. Then try the quiz with the diacritics. Then, move on to consonants. This may take more time, as there are many consonants. Then, try the quiz with the consonant-vowel ligatures. Finally, try the quiz with the conjunct consonants. There are many, many combinations possible, so don't worry about memorizing them all. Some of them are extremely rare. The word scramble game also has various levels so that you can incrementally test yourself, starting from just the first few consonants. The last level, common words, is a good final test of your abilities. You can also try the typing game if you have a Telugu keyboard installed on your phone.

Portal teaches you an Indian language the way you learned your first one: by following a story and working out what the words mean from what is happening around them. Ten languages, in your pocket. Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, and Telugu. STORIES, NOT DRILLS Matching pictures to words teaches you to match pictures to words. Portal drops you into short scenarios with real dialogue, so meaning arrives with context attached and stays there. START WHERE YOU WANT Choose stories from the topics you actually need or find interesting. No locked pathway forcing you through vocabulary you will never use before you reach the words you needed on day one. READ THE SCRIPT A dedicated Reading section. Learn: a structured route through vowels, consonants and signs, opening with an introduction to how the script works and why it is shaped the way it is. Practice: quiz yourself by sound or by letter. Set how many questions you want. Portal tracks your accuracy and helps master weak letters. WRITE THE SCRIPT Portal teaches how to write inside the app, in three stages: 1. The app draws the letter for you, stroke by stroke 2. You trace over it 3. You write it on a blank canvas, and the app tells you whether you got it right Then Practice the letters learned. Portal tracks your accuracy and helps master weak letters. NUMBERS, PHRASES AND GRAMMAR Learn to count in your chosen language, step by step. New sections for basic phrases and basic grammar sit alongside the stories, for anyone who wants a little more scaffolding than pure context can give. SEE YOUR PROGRESS A statistics section with graphs and a skill by skill breakdown, so you know which parts of the language are solid and which ones need work. EARN GEMS Finish a story, collect gems. *SHAPE THE APP Send feedback straight from Settings, suggest new features, and vote on what other learners have asked for. Questions or problems?
