Music Compass teaches you to read music and to hear it — and then lets you play along with the music you already own. It was built for anyone starting out or starting again: a child working through their first lessons, a teenager in music school, an adult picking up an instrument after twenty years away. The exercises begin with a single note on a staff and go as far as intervals, key signatures and rhythm, one step at a time, and nothing ever asks you to have studied before. WHAT YOU LEARN • The notes on the staff, from the first line to the ledger lines above and below, in treble and bass clef — and a lesson on the C clef • Intervals, by ear and by sight • The circle of fifths, with key signatures, dominants and relative minors • Rhythm: tap what you read and find out how close you were • Scales, chords and progressions in the Harmony Explorer • Your own singing voice, with an analogue needle that shows you when you are in tune and works out your vocal range Every exercise has levels, and a game that turns note reading into something you actually want to keep doing. The app plays each example while it highlights the note on the staff, so what you hear and what you see arrive together. PLAY YOUR OWN MUSIC • A multitrack MIDI player with General MIDI sounds and a mixer for every track: mute the melody and play it yourself, slow the piece down, change its key • Karaoke on audio files — MP3, WAV, M4A — slowed down without dropping in pitch, or transposed without slowing down, with the lyrics scrolling in time • A chord-sheet transposer: open a text file with chords over the words, a MusicXML score or a MIDI file, change key or add a capo, and print it clean • A two-octave virtual piano • Choose the folder where you keep your music once, and from then on your pieces open inside the app with a single tap FOR YOUR TEACHER The app keeps a record of everything you practise and turns it into a one-page PDF: exercises done, accuracy, days practised, your vocal range. Print it or send it to whoever is following your progress. PRIVACY, AND WHAT THAT ACTUALLY MEANS Music Compass works entirely on your device. There is no account to create, no connection required, and nothing about you is collected, stored or sent anywhere — not your recordings, not your results, not your files. The vocal tuner listens through the microphone and nothing leaves the phone. Music Compass does not contain or distribute anyone else's music: it plays the files you already have. The few demonstration pieces included are originals, written for Music Compass. IN YOUR LANGUAGE, WITH YOUR NOTE NAMES Fifteen languages, and note names in the system you were taught: Do-Re-Mi, C-D-E, or the German nomenclature with H. For iPhone and iPad. It also runs on Macs with Apple silicon. WHAT IT COSTS The exercises, the game and the reading lessons are free to try every day, with a handful of practice sessions and file imports included, and the Repertoire turns three of your songs into chord sheets before you have to decide. Two optional packs unlock everything without limits — one for the lessons and exercises, one for the MIDI and audio studio, which is also the one that opens the Repertoire — and a bundle covers both. One payment, no subscription.
