Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is monetization model: Speedometer at free with in-app purchases against Speedometer's subscription. Speedometer also leads on review sentiment (100% vs 71%) and iOS requirement (15.0 vs 18.6). Speedometer's advantage is rating (4.8 vs 4.6) and ratings volume (251 vs 42). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Speedometer sells 8 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per 7 days and Speedometer sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Speedometer holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Speedometer has 251 ratings behind it against 42, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 71% of Speedometer's written reviews are positive against 100% of Speedometer's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
