A few notes before purchasing: Timelane acts as a unified interface to Apple's Calendar and Reminders apps, and thus all of your data remains safely stored in those apps and in iCloud (even if you ever delete Timelane). This app has been designed to specifically work with those two apps, and is actually fine to be used alongside them. A "deadline" is a specific task with an assigned date that will show a daily reminder that it is coming up, so you'll never forget (the app uses a "low priority" flag from Reminders to signify a deadline).
