Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Pair Away at 4.6 against Edgewise's 2.8. Pair Away also leads on update cadence (every 6 weeks vs every 9 months) and ratings volume (23 vs 5). Edgewise's advantage is review sentiment (80% vs 56%) and iOS requirement (7.0 vs 12.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Edgewise sells 2 one-off in-app purchases and Pair Away sells 10 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Pair Away holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 2.8. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 5 and 23 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 80% of Edgewise's written reviews are positive against 56% of Pair Away's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Edgewise ships an update every 9 months, Pair Away every 6 weeks. The most recent releases landed on June 5, 2026 and August 25, 2026 respectively.
