The clearest difference is rating: Scary Sounds and Effects at 4.4 against Sounds Grate's 3.5. Scary Sounds and Effects also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 4) and ratings volume (206 vs 4). Sounds Grate's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 4 months vs every 14 months). On price and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Sounds Grate sells 4 one-off in-app purchases. Scary Sounds and Effects asks for nothing beyond the download.
Scary Sounds and Effects holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 3.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Scary Sounds and Effects has 206 ratings behind it against 4, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 63% of Sounds Grate's written reviews are positive against 45% of Scary Sounds and Effects's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Sounds Grate ships an update every 4 months, Scary Sounds and Effects every 14 months. The most recent releases landed on October 19, 2026 and October 26, 2026 respectively.
