Pip 3 gives you blazingly fast, true random dice rolls, for role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons®, Fate™, or Dungeon Crawl Classics, and tabletop games like the Yahtzee® dice game. It features an intuitive interface that gets out of the way, and lets you roll, touch, and organize your dice with ease, super fast startup times, unobtrusive sound effects, and the best battery efficiency of any 3D dice. INTERACTING WITH DICE - Shake the device, double-tap, or force touch any empty space in the page to roll. If you have a second generation or better Apple Pencil you can also double-tap the pencil itself to roll. - Tap a die to lock it, tap it again to unlock it. Locked dice will not roll. Tap any empty space to unlock them all. - Move dice around with your finger or fling them against each other. - On iPhone and iPod touch, tilt your device right or left to slide dice on the page. ADDING AND DELETING DICE - Slide the tab on the right side of the screen to access a tray with different types of dice. Drag them out of the tray to add them to the page. You can have any combination of up to 20 dice on a page. - To delete dice from the page drag them back into the open tray. - To access Fate/Fudge Dice™ and Weird Dice (d3, d5, d7, d14, d16, d24, and d30), slide the tab farther to the left. If you slide the tray all the way out, the default dice set will switch back and forth. - Close the tray by sliding the tab back towards the right. COLORS - While the tray is open, choose from a selection of eight vibrant colors on the left side of the screen. - To change the color presets, long press on one of them to open the color picker. Close the color picker by tapping on the left hand of the screen again or any empty space in the page. GROUPING DICE INTO PAGES - Create up to 20 pages to save different dice combinations on each one of them. To create a new page, slide left from an empty space on the last page. - Move between pages by sliding right or left from any empty space. - Delete a page by deleting all the dice on it, and then moving to a different page. - Move dice between pages by holding them with one finger while moving between pages with another. IPAD SUPPORT - Orientation changes, trackpad gestures, Apple Pencil… Pip works on iPad like a charm. - Multitasking support in both Split View, and Slide Over. You can see your character sheet and your dice at the same time. DISCLAIMERS - Pip doesn't feature dice formulas, logs, or automatic dice roll result calculations. - Pip is not a game on its own! It is a physics-based dice simulation for games you already own. * DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS® and D&D® are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC, a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc., in the United States and other countries. Play the digital adaptation of the beloved tabletop board game. Root is a game of adventure and war where 2 to 4 players battle for control of a vast wilderness. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.

Verdict
The clearest difference is price: Pip at $1.99 against Root Board Game's $9.99. Pip also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 6) and review sentiment (90% vs 77%). Root Board Game's advantage is update cadence (every 4 days vs every 10 months) and ratings volume (5.9K vs 101). On ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Pip costs $1.99 and Root Board Game $9.99 up front. Root Board Game sells 6 one-off in-app purchases. Pip asks for nothing beyond the download.
Root Board Game holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Root Board Game has 5.9K ratings behind it against 101, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 90% of Pip's written reviews are positive against 77% of Root Board Game's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Pip ships an update every 10 months, Root Board Game every 4 days. Both last shipped on November 6, 2026.
