Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: TMZ at none against GoDanRiver's 7. TMZ also leads on ratings volume (214K vs 73) and rating (4.8 vs 4.5). GoDanRiver's advantage is iOS requirement (13.0 vs 15.6). On price, update cadence, ads and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. GoDanRiver sells 7 in-app purchases, starting at $25.99 per month. TMZ asks for nothing beyond the download.
TMZ holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: TMZ has 214K ratings behind it against 73, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 63% of TMZ's written reviews are positive against 50% of GoDanRiver's.
TMZ ships an update monthly, GoDanRiver every 2 months. Both last shipped on October 21, 2026.
