Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: KeyFinder at none against Tone Scan's 4. KeyFinder also leads on ratings volume (321 vs 6) and update cadence (every 3 months vs every 7 months). Tone Scan's advantage is rating (3.2 vs 2.8). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Tone Scan sells 2 one-off in-app purchases. KeyFinder asks for nothing beyond the download.
Tone Scan holds the better App Store score, 3.2 against 2.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: KeyFinder has 321 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 60% of KeyFinder's written reviews are positive against 50% of Tone Scan's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
KeyFinder ships an update every 3 months, Tone Scan every 7 months. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and October 22, 2026 respectively.
