Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Learn French For Beginners! at 4.3 against French Essentials's 1.0. Learn French For Beginners! also leads on update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 5 months) and ratings volume (83 vs 2). French Essentials's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 9) and ads (none vs shown). On price, monetization model, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Learn French For Beginners! sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $7.99 per 7 days. French Essentials asks for nothing beyond the download.
Learn French For Beginners! holds the better App Store score, 4.3 against 1.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Learn French For Beginners! has 83 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 61% of French Essentials's written reviews are positive against 50% of Learn French For Beginners!'s, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
French Essentials ships an update every 5 months, Learn French For Beginners! every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 16, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
