Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: Santoor HD at 85% against Sanshin's 25%. Santoor HD also leads on update cadence (every 3 months vs every 16 months) and ratings volume (157 vs 3). Sanshin's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 4.3) and in-app purchases (none vs 1). On ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Sanshin costs $1.99 and Santoor HD $2.99 up front. Santoor HD sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Sanshin asks for nothing beyond the download.
Sanshin holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Santoor HD has 157 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 25% of Sanshin's written reviews are positive against 85% of Santoor HD's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Sanshin ships an update every 16 months, Santoor HD every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on November 6, 2026 and November 1, 2026 respectively.
