GPSRecorder turns your iPhone in a GPS tracker and recording device. Use it: - to record your position, - to record your moves,  - to geotag your external pictures. While recording, the app just gives you your current latitude, longitude, distance and duration of record. You can afterwards review your previous tracks on your phone, including map, distance and speed travelled, or export one as a GPX file for use with other software (GPX is lingua franca for locations), for example for geotagging pictures taken with an external camera. Continued use of Location Services running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life, so there is an economy mode that will only record notable changes (usually several kilometers away).

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is price: GPS Stone at Free against GPSRecorder's $0.99. GPS Stone also leads on review sentiment (42% vs 29%) and ratings volume (7 vs 1). GPSRecorder's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 3.6) and update cadence (every 3 months vs every 21 months). On ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

GPS Stone is free to download; GPSRecorder costs $0.99 up front. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

GPSRecorder holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: GPS Stone has 7 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 42% of GPS Stone's written reviews are positive against 29% of GPSRecorder's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

GPS Stone ships an update every 21 months, GPSRecorder every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 22, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
