Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: MetroTransit DC at fortnightly against AutoTones's every 83 months. MetroTransit DC also leads on rating (3.5 vs 3.1). AutoTones's advantage is ratings volume (119 vs 6) and review sentiment (76% vs 62%). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
MetroTransit DC holds the better App Store score, 3.5 against 3.1. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: AutoTones has 119 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 76% of AutoTones's written reviews are positive against 62% of MetroTransit DC's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
AutoTones ships an update every 83 months, MetroTransit DC fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 17, 2026 and October 7, 2026 respectively.
