Trade-First Subtraction helps students learn and practice the trade-first subtraction method step by step. The app presents subtraction visually, with the numbers aligned automatically so students can focus on the operations in each column. Students can solve randomly generated problems or enter their own subtraction problems, and the number of digits can be adjusted for different skill levels. The Trade-First Method Trade-first subtraction is similar to traditional column subtraction, but the regrouping is completed before the subtraction begins. The method has two stages: * First, all necessary trading, regrouping, or borrowing is completed * Then, the subtraction in each column is solved This gives the method its name: trade-first. Regrouping is animated step by step so students can see what happens. Regrouping across several columns is also supported. Easy to Use After the student solves the operation for each column, the correct answer moves into the right place. If the student presses the wrong button, the answer appears above the keyboard but does not move. Features: * Numbers with 2–5 digits * Randomly generated or manually entered problems * Step-by-step trade-first subtraction practice * Animated regrouping * Supports regrouping across several columns * Current operation for each column can be hidden * Operands of the current operation can be highlighted * Customizable interface colors * Adjustable animation speed * Column separator lines can be hidden Teacher Endorsement: “The math apps by Esa Helttula allow students to practice and reinforce the specific computation strategies taught in class, with as much or as little scaffolding as necessary. They also provide individualized feedback to each student, with an immediacy that is not always possible through pencil and paper practice.” — Rita Zeni, Ecole Sandy Hill Elementary, Abbotsford, BC, Canada Other iDevBooks Math Apps: Other iDevBooks math apps include Column Addition, Long Multiplication, Long Division, Column Subtraction, Visual Multiplication Table, Partial Differences Subtraction, Partial Products Multiplication, Partial Sums Addition, Decimal Rounding, and more. Owlet: Cube6 is an app that uses two Owlet CubeTower manipulatives. This app builds on the Cube3 app by enabling students to create six-digit numbers by stacking small cubes in the columns of two CubeTowers. Cube6 has three modes. Each corresponds to a different topic in place value: Thousands, Money, and Decimals. For each topic, there are five different activities. - Explore: Students place cubes in the CubeTowers to create numbers that are shown on the tablet. - Make: Students are prompted to make a target number by placing cubes in the CubeTowers. - Build: Students solve number puzzles. For example, students might be asked to build a number between 200,000 and 300,000 using 15 cubes. - Compare: Students create a number in the CubeTowers and then compare it to a number generated by the app. - Round: Students use the CubeTowers to round a number to a specified place.
