The Scripture Citation Index is the mobile version of scriptures.byu.edu. This app lets you navigate easily between the scriptures (standard works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: The Holy Bible, The Book of Mormon, etc.) and the General Conference talks and other writings that cite those scriptures. For example, you can see who has cited 1 Timothy 4:12 or Daniel 2:44 in General Conference (1942-present), in the Journal of Discourses, or in Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Our users tell us that this app is very helpful for scripture study and lesson/talk preparation.

LDS Hymns was the first app in the App Store that made the sheet music of the Hymns available to iOS users. After a couple years I donated my code (as well as the LDS Music app name) to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, figuring that almost everyone would stop using this app. I was wrong! Apparently folks like the fact that this app has fewer features! So after many requests, I've updated the app with some great new features while keeping the simplicity you've come to enjoy: * Support for 38 languages (not a typo)! * LDS Hymns & the Children's Songbook (for supported languages) * Universal app with support for iPad and large-screen iPhones * Automatically sync your favorites between devices with iCloud * Makes use of the latest features available on iOS (e.g., Force Touch) Please note that due to copyright restrictions I've had to remove the music and/or words from several of the hymns. This will be obvious within the app. Please note that this application is not a product of or endorsed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Scripture Citation Index at 4.9 against LDS Hymns's 4.1. Scripture Citation Index also leads on review sentiment (97% vs 75%) and ratings volume (3.3K vs 63). LDS Hymns's advantage is update cadence (every 3 months vs every 6 months) and iOS requirement (10.0 vs 16.4). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Scripture Citation Index holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.1. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Scripture Citation Index has 3.3K ratings behind it against 63, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 97% of Scripture Citation Index's written reviews are positive against 75% of LDS Hymns's.
Scripture Citation Index ships an update every 6 months, LDS Hymns every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 19, 2026 and October 14, 2026 respectively.
