Your go-to app for data unit conversion, comparison and sizing ############################################### Logcaliper helps IT and security engineers understand the volume of data they are dealing with when designing a big data or security information and event management (SIEM) solution. It converts data sizes and rates, estimates storage for long-term retention, and sizes log management, SIEM and distributed storage clusters. Message rates per second, minute, hour, day or month; bit and byte rates from bits per second up to exabytes per year; decimal or binary units. Free on iPhone and iPad. NEW IN 3.1: - Threshold, a game. Data sizes fall one at a time and you sort each against a line (more than 1 GB? more than a Blu-ray? more than a day of one firewall's logs?) before it hits the floor. Three lives; every miss shows the real number. The items are the app's own figures: the comparison catalogue and log volumes worked out exactly as the Storage screen does. Best score kept on the device. Open it from the About tab, or play on the web at logcaliper.app/threshold/ - Under a conversion to or from a bit or byte rate, a new line says what share of an Ethernet link that stream is, e.g. 24% of 1G Ethernet (payload, not line rate). Long-press copies it with the rest of the answer - Switching decimal and binary now recalculates the answer at once - Four new sizes to compare against: the weights of an 8B, a 70B and a 405B model at 16-bit precision, and a 15-trillion-token training set, by parameter count so they will not date - PCI DSS retention labels now cite requirement 10.5.1 of v4.0.1: 12 months kept, 3 months immediately available HIGHLIGHTS: - Conversion of data size and rate units - Decimal or binary conversion modes - Database of average log sizes for 39 common products, measured from real-world log samples - Typical event rates for 16 source categories: pick a source and see the events per second for that kind of device, with the condition that drives the figure, whether Sysmon is deployed, whether flows are sampled, what the database audit policy is - Customizable average log size - Lists of log sources, with a weighted mean log size across the list - Estimation of storage capacity requirements - Estimation of distributed storage cluster size (e.g., number of Hadoop nodes) - Comparison of any data size against things you recognise, from a page of text to a gram of DNA - Share of an Ethernet link for any bit or byte rate - Long-press any result to copy it, as the number or as the whole sentence with its units and mode - Email export of results - Customizable log retention period - Rounded and simplified results for easier reading - Threshold, a game that teaches the scale of data and log volumes, also playable on the web at logcaliper.app/threshold/ - Requires iOS 18 or later
