Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: ARTE.tv at 61% against RTLPlay.lu's 0%. ARTE.tv also leads on ads (none vs shown) and ratings volume (333 vs 1). RTLPlay.lu's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 4.5) and iOS requirement (15.6 vs 18.0). On price, update cadence, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

RTLPlay.lu holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: ARTE.tv has 333 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 61% of ARTE.tv's written reviews are positive against 0% of RTLPlay.lu's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
ARTE.tv ships an update every 6 weeks, RTLPlay.lu every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 15, 2026 and October 1, 2026 respectively.
