Verdict

The call

ARTE.tv and VDM both sit at 4.5 stars, but that hides the real split: 61% of ARTE.tv's written reviews are positive against 25% of VDM's. ARTE.tv also leads on ads (none vs shown) and ratings volume (390 vs 6). VDM's advantage is iOS requirement (14.0 vs 18.0). On price, rating, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

VDM holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: ARTE.tv has 390 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 61% of ARTE.tv's written reviews are positive against 25% of VDM's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

ARTE.tv ships an update every 6 weeks, VDM every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 29, 2026 and October 30, 2026 respectively.
